TourWriter setup and removal instructions


There are two scenarios for installing TourWriter on a computer - firstly the full install including the central database, and then the client only installs which install just the user interface that users will use to connect to the central database via a network. The following instructions cover both scenarios:

Install:

  • Download TourWriter from the link provided by TourWriter support. When the download starts, may get the option to either 'Run' the install immediately (which will download and start installer), or you can choose to 'Save' the file to your computer (after download is complete double click the downloaded file 'TourWriterSetup.exe' to start the install.
  • When the TourWriter installation starts, the only important decision to make is which install option to choose - full install including database, or client only if the database will be on a different computer. Here is how the option screen looks:
  • On the next screen you will be able to choose the directory to install TourWriter into, but accepting the default settings (just click 'Next') is advised.
  • And now the installation process will begin: checking for .NET Framework and downloading and installing if required, if 'full' install checking for SQL Server and downloading and installing if required, and finally installing the TourWriter client software.

  • The following shortcuts will be installed from which to start TourWriter: desktop shortcut, quick-launch shortcut, and the usual Start menu > All Programs > TourWriter.
  • When running TourWriter for the first time, at the login prompt you must choose the database path to connect to. Click on the server combo box and choose 'Add new server', then 'Search network' to help find the server - typically it is the server computer name, then \, then TourWriter (i.e. ComputerName\TourWriter).

Update:

  • TourWriter checks for new updates automatically, or you can do it manually from TourWriter Help > Check for update.
  • If a new update is found it is downloaded (only the updated file(s) rather than the entire application), and then you are asked before it automatically closes TourWriter, runs the update, and restarts TourWriter.
  • These updates can also be downloaded and installed manually.

Uninstall:

  • Go to Start menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  • Select TourWriter from the list, and choose to uninstall it.
  • Important: the above uninstall will NOT uninstall the database software, as we cannot be sure that the database software is not used by other applications also. If you are sure you want to uninstall the database, please contact us and we will help you to ensure that no other applications will be affected by its removal.
